Join us for the 29th annual Walk & Roll to School Day on October 14, 2026!
Walk & Roll to School Day is an annual event that brings together communities from across the country (and around the world!) to walk and roll to school on the same day! Walk and Roll to School Day is a great opportunity for students to build healthy habits, foster family and community support, and have fun while walking to school! Walking and rolling to school also gives families and community members the opportunity to identify neighborhood safety concerns and consider what can be improved to ensure every student has a safe route to school. This event creates an opportunity to encourage healthy, active behaviors and shift mindsets in ways that can inspire lasting, community-wide change. Together, we hope to build communities that are accessible, connected, and less dependent on automobile transportation!
This annual event celebrates the benefits of active transportation for students, families and teachers, including:
- Physical activity
- Student pedestrian safety skills
- Community engagement with the local transportation network
- Cleaner air

Bike Walk Knoxville has been participating in this event for years and encourages everyone who is able to join us! Walk and Roll to School Day not only aligns with our goals of promoting safe walking and biking, but also provides an opportunity for diverse populations across Knoxville communities to come together, celebrate, and experience the benefits of active transportation. Participation can look different for everyone, from students walking or rolling to school directly from their home to students meeting up at a central location such as a park and walking to school together from there.
Knox County Schools will observe Walk & Roll to School Day on October 14th, as the national date takes place during Fall Break.

Brief History of Walk & Roll to School Day:
- The Partnership for a Walkable America founded Walk to School Day in the United States in 1997 and began with events in two cities: Chicago and Los Angeles. Canada and Great Britain already had Walk to School events in place.
- In 2000, Canada, the United Kingdom and the U.S. joined together to create International Walk to School Day. Over 2.5 million walkers were estimated to have participated.
- In 2022, Walk to School Day was rebranded as Walk & Roll to School Day, a name that better reflects the longstanding goal of promoting safe, accessible spaces for all active trips, starting with children and the trip to school.
Walk & Roll to School Day is a nationally recognized event that is organized by the National Center for Safe Routes to School. More information about the event and resources to help plan something in your school can be found here!
